What is Rhinoplasty?

Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the nose causes many people to seek rhinoplasty. This surgery improves the overall aesthetics of the face by reshaping the nose.

HOUSTON, TX, November 15, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dissatisfaction with the appearance of the nose causes many people to seek rhinoplasty. This surgery improves the overall aesthetics of the face by reshaping the nose. Although you will see results from rhinoplasty about a week after surgery, the healing period is complete after a year, when you will see the best results from your rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty Enhances Many Aspects of the Nose

Rhinoplasty can improve the look of your nose, and consequently the overall look of your face, by altering these common nose imperfections:

- Large nose
- Small nose
- Wide or bulbous tip
- Drooping tip
- Long nose
- Short nose
- Crooked nose
- Wide nostrils
- Low or high nasal bridge

Many people have decided that rhinoplasty is right for them because they are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose. During a consultation with a plastic surgeon, you can discuss what you do not like about your nose, as well as what to realistically expect from rhinoplasty results. At that point, you can make an informed decision about the procedure and decide if a nose job is right for you.

Recovery from Rhinoplasty

Prior to your rhinoplasty surgery, arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you for the 24 hours following surgery. Do not plan to complete any chores, such as cooking or cleaning, once you get home. You will need to rest after surgery, but be prepared to keep your head elevated above your chest to reduce bleeding and swelling.

Following is a common timeline for recovery, although it varies for each patient:

- Plan to rest and not participate in any activities for 24 hours.
- During the first few days after surgery, you may experience the normal draining of old blood and mucous from your nose.
- During the first week, your nose will need dressings and a splint will be placed on your nose for support.
- Most patients return to work and social activities 10 to 14 days after rhinoplasty surgery when the signs of having surgery have become unnoticeable.
- Slight swelling can linger for three to six months after surgery.
- Expect to see the total results of your rhinoplasty one year after the surgery when healing is complete.

To prevent swelling and bleeding, and to preserve the results of your surgery, your rhinoplasty surgeon will probably instruct you to avoid certain activities during the early recovery period. Depending on the discretion of your surgeon, you may need to avoid:

- Swimming
- Blowing your nose
- Strenuous exercise (i.e. jogging)
- Excessive facial expressions
- Sun exposure on your nose for a few months (to prevent discoloration)

In some cases, after the year-long healing process is complete, patients desire further changes to their nose appearance. Rhinoplasty revision can be performed to achieve the results you want.
