Dr. John Metzger Celebrates 35th Year in Optometry

Dr. Metzger of Kansas City Vision Performance Center marks 35 years in optometry and focuses on the growth of his practice and reaching more patients through vision therapy and low vision rehabilitation.

OVERLAND PARK, KS, November 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It was 1977. Apple released its first personal computer and KC and The Sunshine Band were on the top of the pop charts. That same year, University of Houston College of Optometry graduate Dr. John Metzger began practicing general care optometry in Hiawatha, Kansas. This year, Dr. Metzger celebrates his 35th anniversary of practicing optometry.

As a former high school science teacher, Dr. Metzger understood the importance of learning. He resolved when he began his career that in order to provide his patients with the most up to date care, he would closely follow scientific research and advancements that were rapidly changing the field of optometry. Throughout his 35 year career, Dr. Metzger has witnessed new technology and medical legislation propel optometry into main stream healthcare.

Dr. Metzger's consistent interests in the growth of optometry lead him to incorporate vision therapy into his private practice in 2000. Through his own work in this emerging area of vision care, he saw first-hand the benefits of providing his patients access to specialized vision therapy. "Vision is what happens after you see something. General optometrists focus on sight, making sure that the eyes are focused, with glasses or contacts but sight is just one of the many visual skills people need to be able to be successful in reading and learning." explains Dr. Metzger. "Integrating vision therapy into my private practice was a way for me to provide comprehensive care to some of my patients who were having visual difficulties that went beyond seeing 20/20."

Dr. Metzger began a new chapter in his career eight years ago when he partnered with his wife Jean and daughter Caroline to open Kansas City Vision Performance Center. Closing his private, general practice in rural Hiawatha after 30 years and opening a specialty vision center in the Kansas City area afforded Dr. Metzger the opportunity to help a larger group of patients in need of developmental optometry, neuro-optometry and low vision care. "Our office makes sure that each patient is able to process visual information and use that information to direct their actions. We show people how they can have a satisfying visual life when delayed development, disease or injury has hindered their peak visual performance." says Dr. Metzger.

While some doctors would be considering retirement after 35 years, Dr. Metzger is looking toward the future and growing his practice. Expanding his partnerships with professionals in other areas of medicine and therapy, he hopes to be able to reach more patients in need of comprehensive vision care. "It's an incredible experience to be able to positively impact the quality of someone's life." says Metzger. "Whether helping a child succeed in school or providing help to an adult wanting to become visually independent again, I feel that my career is extremely rewarding."

It's been 35 years since Dr. Metzger began his work in optometry. The scope of his vision care practice has changed and his passion for optometry has grown, but his dedication to providing an advanced level of care to each of his patients has remained the same.

Dr. Metzger has a private practice, Kansas City Vision Performance Center, in Overland Park, Kansas. It is the only optometry practice in Kansas and Missouri dedicated solely to the full spectrum of visual performance, including vision therapy, developmental optometry, low vision rehabilitation and neuro-optometry. Dr. Metzger and his team of therapist provide an advanced level of vision care to patients of all ages through individualized diagnostic, therapeutic and rehabilitative services.
