HIPAA 5010 Transition: Thirty Percent of Providers Report Payment Delays

Vendor problems trigger lack of confidence for upcoming ICD-10 transition.

OREM, UT, December 20, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nearly a third of surveyed healthcare providers report that they have received varying levels of payment delays during the HIPAA 5010 transition, with clearinghouses causing 52 percent of those delays. That is according to a new study from KLAS entitled Clearinghouse Services 2012: Yesterday 5010; Tomorrow ICD-10.

The study examines vendor performance through the transition. Research focuses on key aspects of vendor performance, including functionality, communication, tools, workflow, and other key metrics. Additionally, the findings indicate which clearinghouses appear to be the most unprepared and which have been the most proactive.

While 5010 was a challenge, providers see it as a foothill in comparison to the ICD-10 mountain that is looming ahead.

"While the bulk of the responsibility for changing codes lies with software vendors, providers still expect their clearinghouse vendors to be prepared for the change," said report author Mark Wagner. "Clearinghouse vendors who really stepped up their game for 5010 helped alleviate some of the pain from unprepared payers and PM vendors, which providers have no control over."

As part of the study, respondents rate their confidence level in their vendors' ICD-10 preparedness based upon their 5010 performance. The correlation is--not surprisingly--fairly strong. Clients feel that their experience during the 5010 transition is indicative of what they anticipate experiencing for ICD-10.

Providers across the United States share their experiences about 13 different ambulatory clearinghouse vendors, including
- Allscripts
- Availity
- Capario
