Breast Implants 'Bottoming Out'

As regards breast implants, the term "bottoming out" means one or both implants have descended below the natural fold of your lower breast.

PHOENIX, AZ, December 23, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- As regards breast implants, the term "bottoming out" means one or both implants have descended below the natural fold of your lower breast. When bottoming out occurs, your nipple may sit unnaturally high on breast mound, and your breasts may appear asymmetrical or droopy. If you chose inframammary incisions for your breast augmentation, your scar may move to the midline of your breast when bottoming out occurs as well.

Reducing Your Risk

There are breast augmentation options your plastic surgeon can offer to reduce your risk of bottoming out. These include:
- Breast implant size - bottoming out is more common with large implants
- Breast implant type - saline is heavier than silicone and may be more likely to produce sagging
- Breast implant placement - particularly with large or heavy implants, those placed above the chest muscles are more prone to bottoming out

Your plastic surgeon will consider the size and shape of your natural breasts along with how much breast tissue is present. Based on these and other anatomical factors, he or she will be able to help you determine what options will most reduce your risk for bottoming out.

Breast Implant Revision

In some cases, the only way to treat bottoming out is through breast implant revision surgery. There are a number of techniques that your plastic surgeon may utilize to correct bottoming out, most of which should not require new incision locations. Like your initial breast augmentation, your revision surgery should be catered to meet your exact needs and used to help you reach your aesthetic goals.

If you require breast implant revision surgery, make sure you are working with a board-certified plastic surgeon that has experience correcting post-augmentation issues.
