HENAAC Scholars Program Now Accepting Applications

Great minds in STEM seeks highly qualified academic and technically talented Hispanic students.

LOS ANGELES, CA, February 22, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The 2013 HENAAC Scholars Program at Great Minds in STEM is now accepting applications from competitive-eligible, graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students and graduate students, who demonstrate high academic excellence and a commitment to the Hispanic community, while pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM).

Since its inception, in 2000, the HENAAC Scholars Program has awarded over $1.7 million in scholarships to 874 exceptional STEM students.

"I am very honored to receive this leadership award," states Toni Tullius, the 2012 HENAAC Graduate Student Leadership Award Winner, and a mechanical engineering doctoral candidate at Rice University. "Through my actions, I want to help as many people as possible to succeed in their endeavors and to find happiness in their daily lives...I will work to positively influence those I can reach through my years of teaching and mentoring."

Through the program, eligible students receive scholarships that range from $500 - $10,000. In addition, scholarship recipients will receive registration, travel and lodging, to attend the 25th Anniversary HENAAC Conference, in New Orleans, from October 3 - 5, 2013. Recipients are presented their scholarship alongside their sponsor during the Student Leadership Dinner.

Scholarship applications are evaluated based on merit, need and quality of the application by a review committee consisting of past HENAAC Awards winners, HENAAC Hall of Fame honorees, and faculty, scientists and engineers from corporate, government, and academic partners.

"The HENAAC Scholars Program has changed lives," says Ray Mellado, GMiS CEO and Chairman of the Board. "Over the last 13 years, we have had students become STEM college graduates and are now in the STEM workforce."

The application deadline is April 30, 2013. Winners will be announced on August 13, 2013. More information and guidelines, along with the application form is available at www.greatmindsinstem.org or by contacting Kathy Borunda Barrera, Manager, Recognition Programs, at (323) 262-0997, ext. 300 or via email to [email protected].
