Where to Stay Along the London Marathon's 26.2 Mile Route

Spectators and runners come to London for the famous London Marathon.

LONDON, ENGLAND, April 17, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- For visitors arriving in London for the London Marathon on Sunday 21st April 2013 there's still time to find somewhere to stay for the weekend including a wide choice of cheap London hotels along the 26.2 mile route which starts at Blackheath and Greenwich Park and ends on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

For the elite runners and elite wheelchair race the route starts at Blackheath, Shooters Hill Road, where nearby hotels include Ibis London Greenwich, Novotel London Greenwich and Devonport House, a four-storey red-brick block in historic buildings that were once part of the Royal Naval College, now operated by De Vere Venues.

Historic sites on this part of the route include the Woolwich Royal Artillery Barracks which has the longest Georgian facade in Britain and was one of three 2012 Olympic Games venues in Greenwich. Hotels near here include Novotel London Excel Hotel, Custom House Hotel and Aloft London ExCeL, the only hotel directly connected to the ExCeL International Exhibition and Convention Centre where registration takes place.

The London Marathon course then winds its way through Charlton and Woolwich, Greenwich - passing by the Cutty Sark - before crossing the River Thames at Tower Bridge just before the half way point. Hotels close to Tower Bridge include Hilton London Tower Bridge, Think Tower Bridge London and The Tower, a mid-range hotel from the Guoman hotel group with superb views overlooking River Thames, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London, St Katharine's Dock and the City of London.

The runners then go down to the tip of the Isle of Dogs peninsular, to Mudchute, home to the biggest inner city farm in Europe, before passing St Katharine's Dock at mile 22, with wonderful views of Thomas Telford's 1828 warehouses, and the Tower of London.

From there it's into the City of London, past Billingsgate Market where Ibis London Docklands, Radisson Blu Edwardian New Providence and Hilton Canary Wharf are all just a 6 to 8 minute walk from the historic fish market.

At mile 25 the runners reach Parliament Square and Big Ben where recommended hotels include the mid-range Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel, the London Marriott Hotel County Hall, and the InterContinental London Westminster which opened its doors in November 2012, injecting a new lease of life into an historic former government building.

For those who want to stay close to the finish line on The Mall, in front of Buckingham Palace, the best nearby hotels range from The Goring hotel, where Kate Middleton spent the last night before her wedding, to the Crowne Plaze London St James hotel and The Rubens at the Palace, both mid-range in price and both within five minutes' walk of Buckingham Palace.
