Maryann C. Swann Named a VIP Member of Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Early Childhood Education for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

Ms. Swann is a recognized leader in administrating educational programs for special needs students

ELLICOTT CITY, MD, May 22, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Maryann Swann, Director of the Maryland School for the Deaf's Birth-through-Five Program, was recently named a VIP member of Worldwide Who's Who. This special distinction honors individuals who have shown exceptional commitment to achieving personal and professional success.

Ms. Swann has 35 years of experience in education, with seven years as director of the birth-through-five program at the Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD). Her areas of expertise include early intervention services, childhood special education and curriculum development. On a daily basis, Ms. Swann was responsible for administrating the school's statewide program that provides early intervention services for infant through preschool-aged participants who are deaf and hard of hearing, prior to her retirement. She also conducted home visits to prospective students throughout the state. The Maryland School for the Deaf offers education at no cost to hearing-impaired state residents from birth through the age of 21 years.

Ms. Swann attributes her professional success to her work ethic and her lifelong commitment to learning. She traces her involvement in her profession to her longstanding interest in American Sign Language and her desire to make a difference in the lives of children who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Certified in K-12 special education, Ms. Swann received a master's degree in communication disorders and learning disabilities from Johns Hopkins University in 1981. She is active in the professional community through her membership in organizations such as the National Association for the Education of Young Children, the American Society for Deaf Children, and Hands and Voices. She is also a past member of CEASD.

Ms. Swann is a past member representative of Connections Beyond Sight and Sound, a collaborative project between the University of Maryland, College Park, and the Maryland State Department of Education. The project assists children in the state who are visually impaired, or deaf or hard of hearing, by securing and providing training, technical help and consultation for students, their families and support providers. In her spare time, Ms. Swann enjoys reading, gardening and spending time with her family.

The Maryland School for the Deaf strives to offer free accredited public education to deaf and hard of hearing children in the state up through the age of 21. Funded primarily by the state, MSD has campuses in Frederick and Columbia that serve day students and boarding students. Out-of-state students who meet specified criteria may pay tuition to attend MSD schools. For more information about the Maryland School for the Deaf, visit www.msd.edu.
