Philadelphia Jury Awards Man $19.1 Million in Auto Accident Lawsuit

Bensalem, PA man lost his leg as a result of the crash.

PHILADELPHIA, PA, May 26, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A Philadelphia jury today awarded $19.1 million to a man who was struck by a vehicle as he was trying to push a disabled car to the side of the road in the city four years ago.

At about 2 a.m. on July 26, 2009, Patrick Hennessy was a passenger in a car driven by his friend, Ryan Caruso, north on Roosevelt Boulevard, when it rear-ended another vehicle.

Caruso's vehicle wouldn't start as a result of the collision. He and Hennessy, both of Bensalem, Pa., began pushing the car off the roadway as the vehicle they struck moved behind them with its flashers on.

A vehicle driven by Shawn Robertson Jr. of Philadelphia then struck that car, sending it into Hennessy.

As a result of the collision, Hennessy -- who was 24 at the time -- suffered severe injuries and eventually was forced to undergo an above-the-knee amputation of his right leg.

After a three-day trial in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas, a jury today found that Caruso and Robertson were negligent in the crash.

Attorney Matt Casey, a founding partner of Ross Feller Casey, LLP in Philadelphia, litigated the case on behalf of Hennessy.

"It is our hope that the verdict, once it is paid, will help Mr. Hennessy deal with the long, challenging road ahead of him," Casey said.

For Casey, this is the latest in a long series of seven- and eight-figure courtroom verdicts, some of which have set records in Pennsylvania and across the nation.
