Nawal H. Ammar, Ph.D., Inducted into Worldwide Who's Who for Excellence in Higher Education

Dr. Ammar serves as the chief academic officer for Ontario university



    TORONTO, ONTARIO, May 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nawal H. Ammar, Ph.D., professor and dean at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, has been recognized by Worldwide Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in higher education.

Dr. Ammar teaches social science and humanities at the university. Her research areas include Arab laws, violence against Arab, Muslim and immigrant women, women in the criminal justice system and restorative justice. Dr. Ammar has also published reports that have been referenced by organizations such as the Congressional Research Service, the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development, and the National Women's Council.

Along with 22 years in higher education, Dr. Ammar has worked for the University of Ontario Institute of Technology for six years. She also serves as an advocate for education funding and higher education advancement. As dean, she manages the budget and handles student enrollment, faculty recruitment and evaluation. Her other duties include fundraising and curriculum development. Prior to joining the University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Dr. Ammar taught as a professor at Kent State University in the United States.

Attributing her success to her perseverance and hard work, Dr. Ammar first became involved in her profession because she is a firm believer in education. She also believes that education empowers women, so she began to study women's rights and other issues. As for her educational background, Dr. Ammar received her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Florida. She also received her master's and bachelor's degrees in urban sociology from the University of Salford.

Dr. Ammar belongs to a number of organizations, including the Feminist Formation Journal Board, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, the Canadian Council of Deans of Arts, and the Humanities and Social Sciences. She is also affiliated with the Alliance for Arab Women and the American Society of Criminology. Besides her work with the university, Dr. Ammar volunteers at domestic violence shelters. Her interests include decorating, reading, exercising and listening to music. In the coming years, Dr. Ammar hopes to continue working in an administrative position, excel in whatever she does and satisfy the needs of the university's faculty and students.
