NJ Air Conditioning Customers Saving with New High-Efficiency Units

The energy efficiency of air conditioning units has increased significantly over the past ten years, and it is helping consumers save big on energy bills - in some cases as high as 60%.

WHITEHOUSE, NJ, June 06, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In 2006, the Government raised the minimum SEER rating, which measures efficiency in air conditioning units, for all new units to 13, up from a minimum of 10. This means that many homes operating with air conditioners purchased within the past ten years are still running at less than standard efficiency. This translates into more money spent to keep the home cool. Air conditioners from brands like Carrier now have SEER ratings up to 21, which can represent significant savings in cooling costs.

The savings available are encouraging more homeowners to upgrade to newer models, creating savings that often pay for themselves within the first two years.

Companies like Meyer & Depew, a family owned HVAC company in Kenilworth, NJ, have been installing high efficiency units for many years and have seen the difference that they make for customers.

"There is a major difference between the air conditioning units currently being manufactured and past units," notes Meyer & Depew President Bobby Ring. "If your air conditioner is over ten years old, you should really start investigating replacement units."

Most air conditioners have a life span of 10-15 years, depending on how well the units are maintained. Routine maintenance, such as having your air conditioner serviced at the beginning of the cooling season, changing the filters regularly, and not overworking the system will all help extend its natural lifespan. It is also highly recommended that you purchase a service plan with a reputable contractor to make sure your unit remains in peak condition. Still, after a period of time, wear and tear on your unit will naturally occur and decrease its efficiency. This creates a higher cost to cool your home and a unit that is more likely to break down and require costly repairs.

"Not only can a more efficient unit save you over 50% on your energy costs," adds Ring, "but can also eliminate the costs of repair bills that occur with older units. By spending a little more money now to purchase a high efficiency air conditioning unit you will save considerably more over the life of the unit."

One time that is especially important to have an air conditioning unit inspected by a professional is when purchasing a new home. A home inspector may be able to tell you the age of a unit, but a trained HVAC technician can tell you how efficient the unit is and how well it has been maintained over time. A unit with outdated efficiency standards that hasn't been well taken care of may need replacing faster than you realize.

"When in doubt, have a professional take a look," says Ring. "A reputable professional can give you an honest assessment as to the useful life remaining in your air conditioner and how much you can save by installing a new unit."
