Denver Plastic Surgeon Sees Increasing Popularity of Silicone Implants

Denver plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Campanile notes a rise in breast augmentations that use silicone gel breast implants compared to saline implants.

DENVER, CO, June 15, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Frank Campanile (http://www.campanileplasticsurgery.com), a board-certified plastic surgeon, has seen a greater shift toward silicone gel breast implants with the recent availability of an advanced implant type commonly known as the "gummy bear" implant. The experience at Dr. Campanile's practice appears to be echoed nationally as well.

"My patients now request silicone breast implants the majority of the time," says Dr. Campanile, a breast augmentation specialist in Denver. "From what we've seen at the practice, they are definitely the more popular choice among Denver women."

Both plastic surgeons and their patients find that silicone implants feel more like natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are firmer than saline, mimicking the feel of a youthful breast. There are other advantages to silicone implants as well. For example, saline implants can show visible rippling beneath the skin, particularly in women who have very little natural breast tissue. The more cohesive nature of silicone implants means they are less likely to ripple.

"The visual results should look natural, but it's also very important to women that the results feel natural to the touch as well," says Dr. Campanile, whose practice also continues to offer saline breast implants. "I am able to achieve excellent outcomes for my patients regardless of implant type, but today, more of my patients prefer the feel of silicone, and choose them over saline implants."

The 2012 statistics released by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) indicate that silicone implants are the more popular choice for women throughout the United States as well. Approximately 72 percent of all breast augmentations performed in the United States last year used silicone implants. This is an increase from just 19 percent of breast augmentations performed with silicone implants in 2006.

Recently, a new type of silicone implants using highly cohesive form-stable silicone gel have become available for women as well that may feel even more natural. These implants, nicknamed "gummy bear" implants for their firmer texture, hold their form better than standard silicone implants and are anatomically shaped for natural looking results. Form-stable implants have been in use in Europe for many years already, but were only recently approved in the United States for breast augmentation and reconstructive surgery.

"Although silicone is the more popular choice, there are advantages to saline implants as well," adds Dr. Campanile. "My focus is less on the implant type and more on the desired look each of my patients wants to achieve. Breast augmentation is a big decision and I am very focused on providing in-depth education so that every patient can make the best possible decision."
