Beverly Hills Plastic Surgeon Reports Increase in Male Patients

Like many plastic surgeons nationwide, Dr. David N. Sayah is seeing more appointments from male patients wanting cosmetic procedures.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, June 18, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Although women still comprise the majority of patients for most cosmetic surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) year-end statistics from 2012 both indicate that the number of male patients is on the rise, a trend that Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. David N. Sayah (http://www.davidsayah.com/) has noticed at his own cosmetic surgery practice as well.

"The stigma surrounding male surgery is definitely lessening," says Dr. Sayah, whose male patients choose procedures such as liposuction, tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) and brow lift surgery. "They're learning that a few treatments can help them stay at the top of their game, both personally and professionally."

Nearly one million cosmetic procedures were performed for male patients in 2012, which accounts for about 10 percent of the total number of cosmetic procedures that took place last year in the United States. This is a two percent increase from the previous year, and marks an increase in male patients of over 100 percent in the last 15 years.

Liposuction was the top procedure last year among Dr. Sayah's male patients, followed by rhinoplasty and eyelid surgery. Male breast reduction for gynecomastia (the development of male breasts) is another one of the most popular cosmetic procedures for men.

"Although I'm sure the increase in male patients is due to a combination of factors, using cosmetic procedures to keep their edge in a competitive workforce has moved front and center for men these days," says Dr. Sayah, a board-certified plastic surgeon and breast augmentation specialist in Beverly Hills who also performs a variety of surgical and nonsurgical procedures on both men and women. "Nonsurgical options give men a discreet way to look younger without committing to the recovery time of a major surgery."

Minimally invasive cosmetic procedures are showing the highest growth factor among male patients compared to surgical procedures. BOTOX Cosmetic injections were the number one nonsurgical cosmetic procedure performed in male patients last year, and men accounted for 10 percent of total BOTOX injections performed. Laser hair removal was the second most popular treatment, followed by injectable fillers. Eight percent of skin rejuvenation techniques performed in 2012 were on male patients, including such treatments as laser skin resurfacing, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and facials.

"I am encouraged to see more men exploring their cosmetic options," adds Dr. Sayah. "At my practice, cosmetic procedures in general are on the rise for both sexes. Men obviously have different cosmetic needs and goals, but I am committed to offering the best possible outcomes for each and every one of my patients."
