Who's Laughing At America's Race Issues?

Hit web series "the Unwritten Rules" uses comedy to portray real-life experiences of minorities in predominantly White Corporate America.

LOS ANGELES, CA, July 03, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Race relations in America are still a point of contention - so what's funny? Why are viewers of "the Unwritten Rules" laughing out loud?

From the George Zimmerman trial, to the recent Paula Deen debacle, and even First Lady Michelle Obama's encounter with a heckler being labeled "an angry black woman", you can almost hear the audible groan of Americans as they witness the ugly truth: when it comes to race relations in America, maybe we haven't come so far!

So how can anyone laugh about race relations in America?

According to fans of "the Unwritten Rules", a hit web series much like NBC's "The Office", but with a twist, everyone should be laughing! It's better than crying, which is what seems to be happening more and more these days.

And cast members of "the Unwritten Rules" also think the series opens doors for education and learning. "Kim [Williams] has a tremendous amount of bravery to say 'this is my education and these are my experiences...take it for what it is'," says David Lowe, who plays the "nerdy, awkward Peter". Lowe goes on further to share "I'd say the most important lesson to take from the show is to always try to approach difficult issues, like racial divides, from a place where you're first and foremost willing to acknowledge and laugh at your own issues of ignorance or stereotypes, and always check your ego at the door."

Some might wonder how these actors interact when the cameras are off. Are they still laughing?

Actress Aasha Davis, best known for her roles as Waverly Grady in "Friday Night Lights", Chelsea Lewis in "South of Nowhere" and Bina in "Pariah", gives insight on behind the scenes production of the series. "We have a lot of fun...she [Kim Williams] works with each actor's schedule if they have to leave for other commitments (which is unheard of in Hollywood). Our last episode we shot was one of my favorite shooting days in my career. We laughed 'till my cheeks hurt."

"Everyone, regardless of race, can identify with "the Unwritten Rules" because it's truth. For minorities, it's a look in the mirror and for Whites, it's a window into a glimpse of our journey" says Kim Williams, Writer and Producer of "the Unwritten Rules" and author of "40 Hours and an Unwritten Rule", the book the show is based on.
