Atlanta Shredding Specialists, A Shred Ahead, Discuss New HIPAA Rules

Complicated new HIPAA rules mean new best practices for most covered entities, explains A Shred Ahead.

NORCROSS, GA, July 11, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On March 26th, 2013, new rules came into effect that improve and modify existing HIPAA legislation. Atlanta shredding company A Shred Ahead wants to help your company understand some of these new regulations so that you can continue to be HIPAA compliant.

First and foremost, companies should understand that March 26th began a countdown for compliance: within 180 days (by September 23rd, 2013), covered entities must be in compliance with most of the new HIPAA regulations. This means that you and your company still have some time, but you should start updating your practices immediately to be prepared for the rapidly-approaching deadline.

The most important, and potentially most difficult, of the new regulations regards business associates. The new rules expand HIPAA coverage and liability to the business associates of covered entities, including contractors. Covered entities who did not have an HIPAA-compliant contract with their business associate before January 25th, 2013, must implement a contract, which is compliant with the new HIPAA rules before the September 23rd, 2013, deadline. (The HIPAA-compliant contracts from before January 25th have a year grace period to be compliant with the new HIPAA rules, until September 23rd, 2014.)

New policies and technologies are also a part of the new HIPAA rules, explains Atlanta shredding service, A Shred Ahead. These policies and their needed technology revolve around a provision concerning patient consent management. Out-of-pocket patients can refuse consent to share treatment records with their health insurance under the new rules, and staff and technology must be altered to comply with this.
