7 Tips for Effective Article Writing from Prompt Proofing

Writing articles is quite different from writing a press release or blog post.

VANCOUVER, BC, July 19, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Writing articles is quite different from writing a press release or blog post. Generally speaking, articles are longer and should include some research and some original thought. The following tips may help:

1. Establish your target audience.

It's important to know who your target readers are before you start to write - ask yourself what your readers want to know or what they hope to get from reading your article, then set out to provide it.

2. Be original.

Try to find a unique angle for your article; ideally, you should have original material - no one wants to read the same old ideas rehashed.

3. Be passionate.

In an ideal world you should only be writing about things you are passionate about; your enthusiasm will show through. If you write about something that doesn't interest you at all, it's unlikely that you'll be able to create interest in your audience.

4. Use trustworthy sources.

Examples include professional journals and academic or government websites. Remember to always cite your sources.

5. How long is a piece of string?

Back in my teaching days, this was my favourite response to students who asked, 'How long does my essay have to be?'. Unless you have been given a word limit, then your article is as long as it needs to be. At Prompt Proofing we frequently write articles between 400 and 600 words in length. However, there is no reason your article should not be longer than this if needed - it depends on the complexity of the subject. Just stay on track and avoid repetition or waffling!

6. Plan your writing.

Have an outline for your article before you actually start writing - think what the topics for each paragraph will be and what will be the logical progression. Don't forget an introduction and conclusion.

7. Proofread and edit.

Your first draft should be just that - a draft. Now is the time to refine and polish: rearrange, weed out redundancies, rewrite as needed and check that meaning is clear. Finally proofread - at least twice - or have someone do this for you.
