Eye Doctors in Orlando, Orlando Eye Cautions That Firework Accidents Can Cause Permanent Damage

Firework accidents can cause permanent damage, including vision loss or blindness, warns Orlando Eye Institute.

NORCROSS, GA, August 05, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Even after the 4th of July has passed, many friends and families continue to celebrate the summer with fireworks displays. Orlando Eye Institute, ophthalmologists in Orlando, recommends that these summertime revelers take caution as firework accidents can cause eye injuries and permanent damage to vision.

Most people understand that fireworks can be dangerous, but all too often, the carefree nature of a party or celebration takes over and caution is thrown to the wind. The eye doctors in Orlando at Orlando Eye Institute know that this can lead to disaster: more than 9,000 fireworks injuries are reported each year in the United States. Most of these injuries affect the eyes, and one in six will result in permanent vision loss or blindness.

Parents need to be particularly watchful when children are present at a home fireworks display. The cornea specialists in Orlando warn that nearly half of all fireworks-related injuries are sustained by children, and they recommend that children should always be supervised when fireworks of any kind are present. Even sparklers present a significant risk; they cause the most frequently seen injuries to children.

"We strongly recommend that people attend professionally orchestrated fireworks displays instead of trying to put on their own shows," says Keshini Parbhu, MD at Orlando Eye Institute. "That way, you can enjoy all of the fun of fireworks without having to worry about the dangers. If you must set off fireworks at home, we encourage you to wear protective eye coverings and have anyone else nearby do the same."
