EDMONDS, WA, August 13, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Joseph Albert, DDS has become the only dentist north of Seattle to earn Dipolmate Certification from the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine (ABDSM) for the treatment of snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Dr. Albert practices at Seattle Dental Sleep Medicine at Distinctive Dentistry, 22315 Hwy 99 N, Suite #1, in Edmonds, Washington.

"The American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine congratulates Dr. Albert on fulfilling the high standards required to receive certification through the ABDSM," said ABDSM President Jonathan Parker, DDS. "ABDSM certification signifies to patients, colleagues and professional organizations in both medicine and dentistry that Dr. Albert has met established qualifications and demonstrated a thorough understanding of oral appliance therapy."

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recognizes Diplomate status granted by the ABDSM. For more information about the AASM, please visit www.aasmnet.org.

To sit for the ABDSM certification examination, a licensed dentist must meet or exceed all eligibility criteria designated by the ABDSM for education, clinical experience and patient care. The ABDSM certification exam tests candidates on their broad understanding of oral appliance therapy, including treatment selection, proper fitting techniques and long-term follow-up care.

Prerequisite qualifications to sit for the examination include having worked with sleep physicians at accredited sleep centers, letters of recommendation from sleep physicians, and patient case presentations.

Dr. Albert focuses exclusively on dental sleep medicine and is recognized as one of the Northwest's leading qualified sleep disorder dentists. Dr Albert works closely with physicians and other health professionals to treat sleep-disordered breathing.

"Oral appliances for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea offer patients a treatment option that is safe, effective and easy to use," according to the National Sleep Foundation. For more information on the National Sleep Foundation, please visit www.sleepfoundation.org.

Oral appliances are FDA approved and much better tolerated by patients than CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machines. Treatment compliance is estimated at 90-95%, according to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), while compliance by CPAP users is only 50%. For more information on the AADSM, please visit www.aadsm.org.

Dr. Albert has been practicing comprehensive cosmetic and general dental care for over 30 years. He is a 1980 graduate of University of Washington School of Dentistry.

Established in 2004, the ABDSM is an independent, nonprofit, self-designated board of examiners that certifies licensed dentists who treat sleep-disordered breathing with oral appliance therapy. More information about the ABDSM is available at www.abdsm.org.
