Beverly Hills Breast Surgery Practice Comments on Recent Study

A new study shows that breast reduction patients experience improved quality of life following surgery.

For many women, undergoing breast reduction is like getting a fresh start.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA, September 11, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A recent study shows that women who undergo breast reduction surgery experience a higher quality of life following their procedure, with respect to both physical and mental wellbeing. Dr. David N. Sayah, a board-certified plastic surgeon and one of the breast augmentation specialists at Simply Breasts (http://www.simplybreasts.com/) in Beverly Hills agrees that breast reduction patients typically have a lot to gain from the procedure, and are often thrilled with their results.

The findings, collected by researchers at Ohio State University's Wexner Medical Center, were based off data from the BREAST-Q questionnaire, which helps track the physical and psychological changes that women experience during and as a result of breast enhancement surgery, including breast reduction. The developers of the BREAST-Q describe it as "the only questionnaire to assess breast reduction outcomes that meets international and federal standards for questionnaire development."

"Large breasts can cause a lot of physical discomfort, not to mention that so many women with a more generous breast size feel very self-conscious about their figure," says Dr. David Sayah, who performs a variety of breast enhancement surgeries in Beverly Hills with Simply Breasts. "For many women, undergoing breast reduction is like getting a fresh start."

The questionnaire covers four areas, including physical appearance as well as psychosocial, sexual and physical wellbeing. The answers are then calculated on a 100-point scale. Patients rated their satisfaction with their breast appearance around 20 points prior to surgery, and about 80 points following the procedure. Psychological wellbeing stood at a 41 before breast reduction, and at an 84 after recovery. Sexual wellbeing saw an increase from 40 up to 84, and physical wellbeing went from 43 to 81.

The study results confirm other, less formal sources like the popular cosmetic surgery site, RealSelf.com, where patients can share their results and stories with other member of the community. RealSelf lists breast reduction as having a "worth it" rating of 96 percent, indicating that 96 percent of women are happy with their results and/or would undergo the surgery again. This is one of the highest approval ratings of any cosmetic procedures on the site.

Breast reduction surgery can allow for an increase in physical activity levels as well as lower the frustration and financial investment associated with treating secondary medical complaints, like back pain. The absence of symptoms combined with the new opportunities that smaller breasts allow have a positive impact on quality of life.

"Breast reduction has one of the highest post-operative satisfaction rating of any cosmetic procedure," adds Dr. Sayah. "When you see firsthand all the positive changes these women experience, it's very rewarding."
