SYRACUSE, NY, September 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Whether from tooth decay, injury, or gum disease, dentures are an excellent option for people who are not candidates for implants or veneers. Syracuse dentures provide the patient with a healthy looking smile as well as the benefit of a full set of functional teeth.

There are two main types of dentures: complete (or full) and partial. A complete set of dentures involves the extraction of any remaining teeth in the patient's mouth. There are two methods of receiving complete dentures. The first method, known as traditional dentures, requires the gum tissue to heal completely before the custom made denture-made from molds of the patient's mouth-is fitted and ready to use. Because the shape of the gums can change slightly during the healing process, traditional dentures provide the patient a very precise fit. The downside to this method is that patients must wait 8-12 weeks before the gums have fully healed and must go without any teeth during that period.

Immediate dentures are molded and fabricated before the patients teeth are extracted and are fitted the same day, before the gums have healed, so there is no period that the patient goes without teeth. Because of the changing shape of the gums during the healing process, however, more adjustments and fittings may be necessary to achieve the correct and most comfortable fit in the first few months of wearing the appliance.

Partial dentures are a good choice for patients with some healthy teeth remaining in their mouth. Connecting a clasp on the denture that fits around the natural remaining teeth fits partials. Partial dentures offer a more natural appearance than complete, and are also a more affordable option than bridges, which are artificial teeth that are attached to crowns placed on remaining natural teeth and are permanently affixed into the mouth.

Both complete and partial dentures are made from high quality acrylic and resins, which are molded into a very precise shape to match the patient's original teeth, and are tinted to resemble a natural tooth color. The clasps on most partial Syracuse dentures are made of metal, but plastic and nylon are sometimes used as well.

Syracuse dentists Dr.'s Lawitts and Yeates are pleased to be offering dentures to their patients and they encourage those considering dentures to visit their Syracuse Dental office for a consultation.
