Covenant Garage Doors Announces Recycling Program

Environmentally friendly company has been recycling scrap metal from used garage doors since 2010.

CANTON, GA, September 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Covenant Garage Doors has been actively recycling scrap metal since early 2010, ensuring that large quantities of metal are kept out of landfills.

"Our garage doors contain considerable variety and volume of metals," says general manager James Thomas. "They are manufactured this way to ensure a long, durable life but eventually they do wear out and need replacing. The recycling of the old metal is now a major part of our operation."

In 2010, Covenant Garage Doors started researching a feasible recycling program. Anxious to avoid a convoluted process that would just result in the metal still ending up in a landfill, the company researched metal recycling companies and scrap metal buyers and contacted them to discover just how the process worked, how they preferred to receive the material and what happened to the scrap metal after they acquired it. The company then talked to other industries that already had recycling programs in place. As a result of this extensive research, it was possible to implement a recycling program with minimal start-up costs.

As garage doors are disassembled, they are transported to Covenant Garage Doors' location, where metal is sorted according to type. The sorted metal is then hauled to a recycler who purchases it and then resells it to rendering plants that melt the metal down into 'slugs'. These 'slugs' are transported to manufacturing plants and then used in a wide range of metal products that are later sold to consumers.

"Since Covenant Garage Doors began its recycling program in 2010, it has recycled an estimated six to eight tons of metal," says Thomas. "That metal is kept out of landfills and turned back into useful products. In this way, we are doing our part to be environmentally friendly, responsible members of our community."
