Possibility of Government Shutdown Forces Carlsbad to Postpone Nuclear Summit

The Looming possibility of a US Government shutdown caused problems for speakers and attendees to make definitive plans for Carlsbad's nuclear conference.

CARLSBAD, NM, September 28, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Carlsbad Department of Development's second annual National Nuclear Fuel Cycle Summit has been postponed, CDOD President Dave Sepich announced Friday.

"The looming possibility of a government shutdown has caused serious concerns among many of our speakers and potential attendees," Sepich said. "This conference was designed for legislators and their staff, along with federal and state employees, all of whom may be affected by this shutdown in some fashion. On behalf of the CDOD, it is with deep regret that I announce the postponement of the National Nuclear Fuel Cycle Summit."

The summit was to have taken place Oct. 14-17 and focused on the theme of "balancing policy with science." Leading authors, politicians, scientists and policy makers were all slated to speak. Carlsbad's previous nuclear summit drew hundreds of attendees during the spring of 2012.

A future date for the summit has not been determined at this time.

"Certainly, with the backdrop of the Department of Energy's extremely successful Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) and other nearby facilities, Carlsbad is an ideal location for discussing the nuclear industry's past, present and future," Sepich concluded. "I want to again thank all of the wonderful men and women who committed to speak at our summit, the many volunteers and employees who were planning the event and the thousands of people across the nation who showed interest in this event."
