Stork Nest Discusses How to Know When it's Time to Move up a Size in Disposable Diapers

How do you know when your baby is ready for a larger size disposable diaper? Online discount diaper retailer Stork Nest offers some helpful tips for new parents.

ATLANTA, GA, October 02, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- One of the first things that new parents learn is the importance of well-fitting disposable diapers for preventing leaks and messes, and, more importantly, for keeping your baby happy and comfortable. Just when you get the size right, your baby grows, and you have to decide whether it is time to move to the next larger size. How do you know when that is? Online discount diaper retailer Stork Nest, which sells premium brands like Fisher-Price and Fitti diapers offers tips for parents to determine when to move to a larger size.

Baby's Weight is Key

Increases in the baby's weight are the main indicator of when it is time to go to the next size diaper. If you do not have a baby scale at home, and do not want to wait until the next pediatrician's appointment, you can get on your own scale with and without the baby, and then calculate the difference. However, that may be as exact as using a baby scale. Just don't do what Diane Keaton did in the movie Baby Boom and weigh your baby on the produce scale at the grocery store. They probably won't take kindly to that.

After weighing your baby, look at the weight range for your current size diaper and the next size up to see where it falls. There is generally some overlap in the weight range on diaper sizes. For example, Fisher-Price Happy Days diapers size 1 fit babies from 8 to 14 pounds, while size 2 fit those from 12 to 18 pounds. If your little one is within the weight range for your current size, you probably have some time before you need to move up. However, if he is in the overlap range, it may be time to get the next size.

Signs that a Diaper is too Small

You can often tell just by looking at your baby in his diaper whether it is too snug. Additionally, if you start seeing red marks around your baby's upper legs and tummy from the elastic in the diaper, it is probably too small. If the diaper is not able to contain the baby's poo, it's probably time to move up a size. If you are not sure, go ahead and buy an extra package in the next size. (You will need them eventually anyway.) Try them out to see if they fit better.

Signs that a Diaper is too Big

When you try the next size up, if you notice excessive gaps at the legs and waist, the larger size may be too large for your baby. If it is too big, you will also find that it does not contain any kind of leakage. When the baby has gained another pound or two, try the larger size again.
