Espelette Producer "La Ferme Nahia" Seizes the Opportunity of 2013 Climate Challenges

A dark year for Espelette pepper producers.

"A lot of producers won't be able to provide Espelette pepper to their international clients" amongst them the USA who majors number 3 client just after UK and Germany.

NEW YORK, NY, November 14, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In France, the unfavourable climatic conditions of this past summer destroyed a large part of the crops. Some producers suffer losses of 50%.

"We are in a very difficult year," says Ramuntxo Lecuona, the president of the syndicate of the Espelette pepper PDO. "Rains have leaded to serious delays," he adds. "We lost a month this season."

The excellent conditions of this past October help producers to think positive but with a total crop of 2.9 tons in late September, statistics show a very difficult year to come.

At the same period in 2012, 16 tons of the precious powder were put on the market and 30 tons in 2011.

A new deal for the international markets

In such context, most producers focus on the national market and limit their activity to the powder. The uneven consequences have left small producers by the wayside, some already know that they have lost everything, for some others who emerge relatively unscalthed, it is an opportunity to take over the international market explains Lionel Dandaletche, producer and owner of La ferme nahia.

"A lot of producers won't be able to provide Espelette pepper to their international clients," amongst them the USA who majors number 3 client just after UK and Germany.

One must say that Espelette pepper, backed by the biggest names in the culinary sphere, easily found its place in the top US restaurants' kitchens.

The French exporters of Espelette pepper who had so far a monopoly on the US market should run out of stocks in the coming months. It is an opportunity for the producers to sell directly to the USA under their own brand name.

La ferme nahia focuses its activity on the US market.

With nearly 3 tons of powder harvested early November and several bids submitted to his peers, La ferme nahia seize the opportunity to conquer the USA.

Boasting a partnership with BiarEats, a food brokerage company specialized in the promotion of gourmet products in the USA, La ferme nahia concentrate its efforts on the US market.

Its associations with the importer White Toque Inc or Sysco Metro New York helped the company to approach the market of the high quality food service while offering a packaging and a pricing well-suited to this specific market.

The company's collaborations with some hottest names in gastronomy such as Chef Lior Lev Sercarz, Chef Jason Neroni, Chef Helen Park, Mixologist Francois Morisson... Who became successively la ferme nahia brand ambassadors established the Company as a benchmark reference amongst the chefs and fostered the interest of the US consumers for the spice.
