Nicaragua, One of the Safest Countries in the Region According to the UNDP

In the recently published 2013-2014 Human Development Regional Report by the UNDP, focused on Citizen Security, Nicaragua features as the second safest country in Latin America.



The top three safest countries in Latin America according to this index are: Chile (0.950), followed by Nicaragua (0.914) and Paraguay (0.893).

    MANAGUA, NICARAGUA, November 20, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the recently published 2013-2014 Human Development Regional Report by the UNDP, focused on Citizen Security, Nicaragua features as the second safest country in Latin America in terms of homicide rate, assault victims rate, and authority of the National Police.

This report considered Nicaragua's homicide rate decrease from 12 to 8.7 per every 100,000 inhabitants, placing it among the top five Latin American countries in terms of the No Homicide Index: Chile (0.977), Argentina (0.933), Uruguay (0.930), Bolivia (0.903), and Nicaragua (0.899).

The report, which evaluates 18 countries of the region, also places Nicaragua among the top three countries in terms of the Integrity Index based on the number of assault victims: Panama (1.00), Nicaragua (0.929), and Chile (0.924).

Based on the No Homicide Index and the Integrity Index, this report calculates the overall Security Index for each country. The top three safest countries in Latin America according to this index are: Chile (0.950), followed by Nicaragua (0.914) and Paraguay (0.893).

Nicaragua's National Police is also highlighted in the report as a leading institution in the region for having a preventive, proactive and communitarian focused model. This has also contributed to the high level of acceptance of the National Police in the country, which highly values its good results and legitimacy. According to the report, the countries that best value their police's role to protect are Panama (63%), Chile (59%) and Nicaragua (54%).
