The Shepherd Team Offers International Aid Via Lice Removal

Members of Katie Shepherd's Network of Certified Lice Professionals help orphans rid lice in Guatemala.

My goal is to go in there, identify anyone who has head lice, and teach them to treat so that they have the skills necessary to maintain a lice free facility.

WEST PALM BEACH, FL, December 06, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Several members of the Shepherd Team of certified lice professionals recently returned from Guatemala, where they helped treat orphans in the Prince of Peace Home outside of Guatemala City. The girls, who had been battling head lice for months, were eager to learn how to overcome this reoccurring problem. Not only were they dealing with the frustration and stress that head lice inspire in many of us, but because of a lack of education and accurate information the girls had even been sleeping without any blankets for several months. In a country where the temperature regularly drops below 60 degree at night, the absence of proper bedding only added to their discomfort.

The trip proved to be a rewarding experience for everyone involved. "The girls of Prince of Peace have opened my mind and touched my heart," said Liz Waitze, a member of the Shepherd Team and owner of No More Nits, which services the Hewitt, New Jersey area. "As an American, I have so much available to me, which is quite the opposite of what I saw for the people of Guatemala."

The girls and staff at the orphanage were incredibly touched by the help they received. Kaysey Gilbreath, a staff member at Prince of Peace Home, had reached out to Lice Solutions hoping for advice. "I set out to do some research on alternative methods of treatment, and I stumbled upon Lice Solutions Resource Network. I called with the intention of just asking questions and hopefully getting some advice. Instead they told me Katie Shepherd, a world-renown lice expert, actually travels around the world to help people like us. We began talking and before I knew it, they agreed to come down and help us get rid of lice."

The trip accomplished more than just eradicating head lice from the orphanage, though. Donica Payne, a California graduate of The Shepherd Institute, explains, "We not only taught the staff how to treat lice, but some of the older girls as well. Some of the girls were very interested in pursuing this line of work which could ultimately provide them with resources to make a living."

Katie Shepherd, the founder of the Shepherd Institute for Lice Solutions, joined the team on the trip to Guatemala. This is just one of several trips that she has made to orphanages in third-world countries to offer help where no one else is able. "They not only lack the resources, but the know-how as well. My goal is to go in there, identify anyone who has head lice, and teach them to treat so that they have the skills necessary to maintain a lice free facility."
