APM Engine Parts Explains How to Choose the Proper Type of Transmission Fluid

The engine parts specialists, APM Engine Parts, offer tips for choosing transmission fluid for your vehicle. Using a high-quality fluid improves performance.

ATLANTA, GA, January 20, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The engine parts experts at APM Engine Parts discuss how to select the right transmission fluid for your car or truck. When it comes to preventative vehicle maintenance, this is an often overlooked step. Just as the oil keeps the pistons and other vital engine parts lubricated, the transmission fluid is what allows the gears to turn. Without it, you will not be moving anywhere.

Keep the Wheels Turning

Fortunately, you do not need to change the transmission fluid nearly as often as the oil, with two years or 24,000 miles being the average for most drivers. However, given these longer intervals, making sure to put the right stuff in your vehicle is a top priority.

The first thing to determine is what type of fluid your transmission takes. You can find the answer to this in the owner's manual. It will be either Dextron or Mercon; whatever you do, never use these interchangeably, as doing so could lead to permanent damage of your vehicle's transmission. When working with a rebuilt engines, you will need to research what type of fluid is recommended. Go online or ask someone at a local auto store for assistance.

The only other factor to consider is whether to use a conventional or synthetic blend.

"The general rule of thumb is to use conventional fluid on older vehicles and synthetic for anything newer than 1990," says David DeBuc, Vice President of APM Engine Parts. "The latter costs more, but it operates better at higher temperatures and thus delivers better engine performance. Don't skimp on the quality of your car's transmission fluid."
