CHICAGO, IL, February 13, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Does heel pain got you off of your feet? Do you have plantar fasciitis? It's an inflammation of the plantar fascia. This issue can be caused by a ligament strain. If your plantar fascia is inflamed, the bottom of your foot might feel stiff and tender, or you may experience a shooting pain after your first steps of the day.

"Many athletes suffer from plantar fasciitis because they put a strain on that ligament. They are on their feet for long periods of time, which isn't conducive to their foot situation. Non-athletes also are treated for plantar fasciitis. Each year, almost two million people are treated for this foot condition. It's important to seek professional care," explains Dr. Bryan Hersh, Chicago podiatrist.

Stretching the foot (physical therapy), wearing supportive orthotics, receiving medical injections and undergoing surgery are traditional methods that treat plantar fasciitis. However, these methods sometimes don't provide complete relief or full recovery of the plantar fascia. If your plantar fasciitis persists for more than six months and you aren't responding to traditional foot care, there needs to be another plan of action.

At The Center for Podiatric Medicine, Drs. Bryan Hersh, Mark A. Jones, G. Tsoutsouris and Tara Fox offer shock wave therapy in Chicago. This is a new, innovative treatment that can offer multiple benefits:

- It's a non-surgical procedure
- It's up to 90 percent effective in treating long-term pain relief
- One shock wave treatment takes about 10 minutes
- No anesthesia needed
- FDA approved

This technology emits a setting of pressure waves to the affected area. The waves can help stimulate the body's healing response by enhancing blood circulation. Besides treating plantar fasciitis, shock wave therapy can also apply to Achilles tendonitis, posterior tibial and peroneal tendonitis, shin splints and delayed or non-union of fractures.
