Atlanta Electricians Pat Murphy Electric Explain What a Tamper-resistant Electrical Receptacles Is

Tamper-resistant electrical receptacles help to keep children safe from accidental electrical shocks, explains Pat Murphy Electric.

ATLANTA, GA, February 22, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In 2008, the National Electrical Code began requiring electricians to include tamper-resistant electrical receptacles in all new and renovated homes and domiciles. Residential and commercial electric service Pat Murphy Electric, Inc., wishes to clarify what tamper-resistant electrical receptacles are and their importance.

Smarter and Safer Outlets

Before the National Electrical Code began requiring differently, homes were typically outfitted with standard electrical outlets. These outlets served their purpose, but Pat Murphy Electric's residential electrical contractors note that they had a glaring flaw: you could access electricity by putting an object in one of the outlet holes. Children inevitably would try to explore the outlet with objects without realizing the potential for harm and many children suffered injury or died because of their curiosity.

Tamper-resistant electrical receptacles do not have the flaw standard outlets do. To access electricity through a tamper-resistant receptacle, you have to use an object with two metal prongs, like a plug. The Atlanta electricians explain that the plug effectively unlocks a set of springs that protect the electrical contact of the receptacle, granting access to electricity. However, this set of springs cannot be "unlocked" by a single object, making these receptacles a much safer choice for homes with children.

Pat Murphy Electric, Inc., is pleased with the requirement that all new and renovated homes use tamper-resistant electrical receptacles.

As CEO Guy Roberts says, "This is a quick and easy change for contractors to make, and it will help us to protect thousands of children from harm each year. It's just the right thing to do."
