Comic Book Fun in March with London Super Comic Con

With London Super Comic Con returning for its third year to the London Excel centre, LondonTown.com had the chance to grab an exclusive interview with the organisers.

This year's convention welcomes a whole host of celebrities and creatives, including Jonathan Ross, Arthur Adams and Max Brooks.

LONDON, ENGLAND, March 03, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With geek culture on the rise more and more events are popping up in London to fill the sci-fi and comic convention niche. March sees the ExCel host the London Super Comic Convention (LSCC), returning to London for its third year in 2014.

This year's convention welcomes a whole host of celebrities and creatives, including Jonathan Ross, Arthur Adams and Max Brooks. While further highlights include exhibitor tables for all geeky tastes and what should be one of the largest UK costume competitions, which boasts a trip to one of America's biggest conventions as its top prize. All in all, it is looking to be one of London's best comic events in 2014.

LondonTown.com had the chance to catch an exclusive interview with one of the Organisers.

1. As the first well-known London comic convention of the year, what would you say separates you from the other conventions happening in London?

Our convention's principal focus and foundation has always been Western Hemisphere comics. We therefore have concentrated our resources on gathering together a blend of western hemisphere creators (both mainstream and small press), publishers and exhibitors that no other UK convention can rival.

If you want to enjoy the vast spectrum of the comic universe then our convention is the one for you, as all other London conventions are built on film and TV celebrities or Japanese anime.

2. LSCC returns for its third year in March, what do you feel has been the biggest success of the last two years?

I believe that the most important thing we have done is put the SUPER back into the UK convention circuit. LSCC has been able to attract US and European publishers, creators and comic dealers that would never had considered attending a UK convention in the past, and that to us is the single biggest success we have had.

Having attracted Stan Lee to attend during our first show in 2012, we followed up with a wave of Comic Book Greats in 2013 that included George Perez, Neal Adams and J. Scott Campbell. This year we have comic book legends Arthur Adams and Frank Cho attending as well as celebrity guests Max Brooks (author of World War Z) and TV presenter and geek extraordinaire Jonathon Ross.

No other show in the UK puts Super into comics like we do.

3. The rise of the geek in pop culture over the last couple of years must be a great help to attract larger crowds, have you noticed a wider array of attendees over the last few years?

There is definitely a wider array of attendees in recent years. Having been an attendee of UK conventions for nearly 20 years I can confirm that the attendees in recent years have widened to include collectors, readers and those who prefer to demonstrate their love for the comic medium in a more physical way (i.e. cosplayers) across all ages.

Comic fandom is alive and kicking.
We at LSCC have always examined our attendee mix and have looked to provide an experience that caters for all aspects of that mix. We try to provide our attendees with an experience that they can't experience at other conventions. This year, for example, we have focused on our fans of cosplay and introduced the London Super Costume Championship, Open Masquerade and brought YaYa Han and Riddle over from the U.S. for a rare opportunity to quiz them in person on their costuming skills.

4. LSCC's first year included Stan Lee among the guests. How did you go about getting such a big name to attend?

It was tough. We had to convince his team that a first time UK convention would attract the crowds that Stan deserves, and as he hadn't been to a UK convention for nearly 40 years, the odds were stacked against us.
Fortunately, the LSCC organisers have strong connections in the US comic market and we used our contacts as well a healthy dose of our resources to ensure that Stan's team were satisfied and signed on for attending our inaugural show.

5. Which other well-known comic celebrities would you love to have as guests?

There can be only one .... Steve Ditko.

6. Which aspect of this year's convection are you personally looking forward to most?

It's the same aspect we look forward to each year. It takes a year of planning and execution to produce LSCC. In that time we aim to provide our attendees with a celebration of the comic universe that cannot be experienced elsewhere in the UK and is fresh for our attendees.

It is only at the convention that we can see that a year's work has been justified. It's the smiles and laughter of our attendees that I look forward to most.
