Prompt Proofing Reviews A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

VANCOUVER, BC, April 25, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Those who loved The Kite Runner, will be eager to read Hosseini's second novel. Set in Afghanistan, the title of the novel is taken from a poem about Kabul:

"One could not count the moons that shimmer on her roofs,
Or the thousand splendid suns that hide behind her walls."

The author's love for this once beautiful city is apparent but the novel is set against the background of the turbulent events that have shaped this country and impacted its inhabitants over the last four or five decades from Soviet occupation to the Taliban and beyond.

The novel features two female characters - Mariam and Laila. The two women have very different family backgrounds and are almost a generation apart, yet - thrown forcibly together by circumstances most modern women would consider unthinkable - become unlikely friends and allies. Hosseini's portrayal of the female voice generally rings true and the novel will provide, for many, an eye-opening glimpse of life for women in Afghanistan. Already subjugated to men, the women have few rights - and none at all after the harsh Shi'a law imposed by the Taliban. They must wear the burqa, may not go out in public alone, may not go to school or seek employment and cannot travel without a male member of their family.

Mariam and Laila are both forced into marriage with an older man who brutally abuses them; while Laila harbours an undying love for Tariq, her childhood friend and the secret father of her first child. The story of Mariam and Laila's search for freedom and their country's search for peace plays out against a background of desperation, deprivation, and violence with quiet hope and an amazing example of self-sacrifice.
