Refrigeration Compressor Specialist APM Cool Explains Evaporation Pressure Regulators

The compressor replacement parts business, APM Cool, discusses what evaporation pressure regulators are and why they matter for many commercial HVAC systems. These accessories are used to control refrigerant levels in multi-evaporator units.

ATLANTA, GA, more than one evaporator that operate at varying temperatures, EPRs are meant to control the amount of refrigerant inside the evaporators with higher operating pressures so as to prevent these particular units from operating at lower values.

Why EPRs Are Essential Compressor Parts

Without an EPR in place, a commercial compressor would fail to maintain proper output, in effect leading to inefficient performance and overall system problems. To ensure this does not happen, EPRs are found at the suction line downstream of the evaporator's outlet and beyond the suction line controls section of the unit.

The two factors that influence when and how far the EPR will open and close are the pressure in the evaporator itself and in its internal spring. The former controls the opening sequence and the latter the closing, with both working in tandem to regulate the evaporator's operating pressure (e.g. keeping it from dropping below the desired setting). It should be noted that an EPR will not control maximum pressure. It is only designed to prevent minimum value drops.

According to David Debuc, Vice President of APM Cool, "Before gauging what type of EPR to install, one must determine the type of refrigerant the system is using, the design capacity of the evaporate and the valve's available pressure drop. Only then can you make an informed decision as all of these factors have an influence on part compatibility."
