TOWSON, MD, May 09, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When adults experience sports-related injuries, such as an unexpected hit in football or a blow to the mouth in a boxing match, they sometimes experience tooth loss as a result of the activity. One wrong hit to the mouth or jaw can cause a tooth to loosen, fall out or become what is called a "dead tooth."

Dr. Joseph M. Dickens, D.D.S. specializes in Towson dental implants for patients who are in need of a permanent and effective solution to missing teeth due to sports injuries. He has been practicing advanced dentistry at his private practice since 2001.

Sports Injuries in the United States
Millions of American athletes must visit the emergency room for sports-related injuries each year. The most common injuries are fractures and strain, but a significant percentage of cases affect the face and head. Those cases often involve the loss of teeth. Dr. Dickens often sees patients who come in needing assistance with sports-related tooth loss. Football, basketball and cycling are high on the list of sports with a high incidence of injury.

Dental Implants Are a Preferred Solution
Adults who experience tooth loss due to sports are often young athletes with strong bone density and immune system, which makes them perfect candidates for dental implants from Dr. Dickens. An implant needs a good foundation to properly heal and set in a patient's jawbone. Also, young adult athletes often want a dental fix that will be permanent and last for many years.

For these reasons and more, dental implants are a preferred solution for patients who have lost teeth due to sports injuries. Dr. Dickens advises athletes to come in as soon as possible to have the problem corrected.

"Even one missing tooth can cause the other teeth to shift out of place and make it difficult to eat properly. I recommend that injured athletes come to see me as soon as possible after leaving the emergency room or doctor's office to address the primary sports injury," the Towson dentist says. "Make tooth replacement an issue for urgent care as well."
