Florida AC Repair Specialists at American Air & Heat Explain Why Your AC May Be Too Cold for Comfort

When your AC unit freezes up, your home will be anything but cool.

ORLANDO, FL, June 20, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When an air conditioner has to work harder than it should to cool your home, you run the risk of having it freeze up. Orlando air conditioning repair company American Air & Heat warns that a frozen air conditioner can end up shutting down completely, leaving you very uncomfortable.

To determine whether your air conditioning unit has frozen up, you will need to look at your AC unit and filter. Look for a layer of ice on the copper piping of the unit or any ice on the external components of the unit. The evaporator coil is particularly vulnerable to freezing. Another place to look is at your filter. If it is wet, you probably have a frozen unit.

A common cause of air conditioners freezing up is a dirty air filter. Your HVAC unit needs to be able to pull in air to cool it off, and a dirty air filter keeps it from being able to do so effectively. Your system is forced to work much harder than it should to produce the same temperatures, and this can freeze up the system and ultimately burn out the unit's motor. You will want to replace your filter immediately.

Another cause of AC units freezing is low refrigerant levels. If your unit is low on Freon, the evaporator coil will get too cold and begin to freeze up with condensation.

"Low Freon levels may be as easy to fix as a simple recharge, but they usually indicate a leak in your system," says Matt Boni, President of American Air & Heat. "You will need one of our professionals to inspect your unit to discover the cause."
