Ventana Research Finds Integration Disconnect in Big Data Benchmark Research

Insights from business and IT expose significant need for access and integration of big data.

The research finds that more than half (55%) of participating organizations plan to change how they assess and select big data integration technology in the next 12 to 18 months.

SAN RAMON, CA, June 27, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The deployment of big data technologies has now grown from one-fifth to close to half of organizations, according to "Big Data Integration: Challenges and Opportunities in Accessing and Using Today's Information," the report and findings released today of the latest benchmark research from Ventana Research. The research investigated organizations' need and ability to access and integrate big data as well as the evolving role of this data for areas like analytics, business applications and cloud computing. It was designed to explore trends in the use and integration of big data and the benefits being realized by early adopters and to identify business and IT best practices.

The research finds that more than half (55%) of participating organizations plan to change how they assess and select big data integration technology in the next 12 to 18 months. Among those that have already adopted these tools, the top-ranked benefit is making information more available across the enterprise, reported by 39 percent of organizations. But the Ventana Research Performance Index assessment that is a core part of the company's benchmark research finds that currently only about one in eight organizations is performing at the highest Innovative level in its use of integration technology with big data.

The rapidly increasing use of big data combined with a widespread lack of a dedicated approach in the processing and integration has led to an increase in the amount of time spent on data-related tasks such as reviewing data for quality and consistency (52%), preparing data for integration (46%) and connecting to data sources for integration (39%). For big data to be useful, the research confirms, it must be integrated with business applications (72% of organizations) as well as data warehouses (56%). The research also underscores the increasing role of cloud computing with the finding that organizations view it as critical to interoperate the integration of data across cloud and on-premises computing environments.

"The advent of new big data technologies is unquestionably helping organizations store and process data more efficiently," said Mark Smith, CEO and chief research officer of Ventana Research. "But its immaturity means not enough has yet been done to help integrate and access it across business and IT. This research finds that many organizations are now taking the critical task of integrating big data more seriously in the mission of gaining significant value from their information assets."
