Foot Specialists Of The Conejo Valley Offer Custom Orthotics To Protect Patients' Feet

Westlake Village podiatrist provides custom orthotics to reduce pain and correct foot concerns.

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, CA, July 19, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- While shoe inserts are available at most shoe stores, only custom-made inserts known as orthotics can potentially correct significant foot and ankle concerns. At Foot Specialists of the Conejo Valley, Westlake Village podiatrists Dr. Stefan Feldman and Dr. Charles Kelman can create these orthotics to help patients find relief from foot and ankle pain and potentially correct foot problems, such as shin splits, diabetic foot ulcers and tendinitis.

"So much goes into taking each step for our patients," explains Dr. Kelman, a Westlake Village podiatrist. "Orthotics are carefully and scientifically made based on a patient's foot shape, foot concerns and goals for podiatry treatment."

A patient must have a prescription for an orthotic, chiefly because they require significant evaluation and research to create. If a patient experiences a condition, such as shin splints or chronic calluses, that other interventions have not corrected, on of the Westlake Village podiatrists will assess a patient's overall foot shape, walking pattern, ankle strength and leg functioning.

Orthotic styles vary based on the reason the Westlake Village podiatry patient is utilizing them. Orthotics are typically utilized for either functional or accommodative foot issues. Functional orthotics are made from semi-rigid materials and are used to correct or control abnormal motion, such as Achilles tendinitis, "runner's knee" or plantar fasciitis. They can be slipped into a shoe to provide support and correct abnormal motion.

Accommodative orthotics tend to be softer and more supportive than functional orthotics. These are typically recommended if a person has a physical foot abnormality, such as a bunion, that makes it uncomfortable to walk. Because they are custom-created for the patient's own foot, the orthotic can take pressure off these sore spots. This not only reduces pain, but also allows the area to heal, if possible.

"Patients can benefit from an orthotic if they have tried other inserts or arch supports, but haven't experienced relief or functional improvements," says Dr. Stefan Feldman, a Westlake Village podiatrist. "We use advanced imaging and three-dimensional techniques to determine the best treatment course with orthotics."

Once created and perfected, orthotics can last between five and 10 years. Insurance companies may pay for all or a portion of the costs related to orthotic creation. The team at Foot Specialists of the Conejo Valley is happy to work with patients and insurance companies to provide necessary paperwork.
