QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA, July 25, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Griffith University Professor Allan W. Cripps has been recognized for his dedication, leadership and excellence in medical research and health education.

Dr Cripps had almost 20 years experience in the health and pharmaceutical industries before becoming a full-time academic in 1995. The focus of his research has been in the field of mucosal immunology. Early in his career, he undertook studies directed at defining aspects of the host-parasite relationship at mucosal surfaces and the mechanisms by which antibody is delivered to mucosal sites such as the gastrointestinal tract and respiratory tract. Since that time he has become recognized both nationally and internationally as a leader in this field. What makes his research distinctive is the comprehensive and holistic approach that is undertaken. Research into the most basic aspects of mucosal immune induction is streamed alongside relevant animal models and applied human research.

Dr Cripps has published with his colleagues, almost 300 peer reviewed scientific papers, presented at numerous national and international scientific and medical conferences and has been the recipient of a large number of competitive government and industry research grants totaling over AUD14.5million. He is co-inventor on a number of international patents in the fields of diagnostic technology and vaccine protein antigens for respiratory infections.

Dr Cripps has been highly influential in national and international forums. He has successfully brought major international conferences to Australia including the 9th Congress of Mucosal Immunology, attended by more than 1,000 delegates; and was co-chair of the 5th International Symposium on Pneumococci and Pneumococcal Diseases [ISPPD5], attended by over 600 delegates from 64 countries. A major outcome of the ISPPD5 was the Alice Springs Declaration (a call for global action against childhood pneumonia) and a consensus paper for animal models to test new vaccine candidates against respiratory infections. Dr Cripps is the Secretary of the ISPPD. Most recently, he was successful in securing the 2017 meeting of the 19th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Otitis Media to Australia. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the International Committee for Otitis Media. Dr Cripps is a member of a number of scientific committees and advisory boards related to health and vaccine research. He recently launched the academic e-journal pneumonia and plays an active role as Editor-in-Chief. He is also the founder and steering committee member of NTHi-Watch and was recently appointed to the Council of 100 for the journal Vaccine.

Dr Cripps is a member of a number of Australian and international bodies including the Australian and American Societies of Microbiology, the Australasian Society of Immunology and the American Association for Immunology. He is also a fellow of the Australian Society for Microbiology, the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists and the Institute of Biomedical Science (UK). He is also an Associate Fellow of the Australian College of Health Service Management.

Dr Cripps is a member of the Gold Coast Hospital and Health Services Board and chairs the Research and Education Committee.

At Griffith University, Dr Cripps led the establishment of the Health Group and is now responsible for the executive level leadership and management of the Group. The Faculty is now one of Australia's largest health faculties with over 7,500 full time students across 8 specialty schools.

After realizing such success in his medical research and academic career, Dr Cripps considers passion and hard work to be the driving forces behind his achievements. Looking forward, he aspires to devote even more time to his research and the pneumonia journal.
