Buckingham Palace Summer Opening 2014

'Royal Childhood' gives visitors an insight into a royal upbringing

LONDON, ENGLAND, August 04, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Buckingham Palace hosts a special exhibition on 'Royal Childhood' during the Summer Opening of its State Rooms which draws visitors in their thousands to London each year and now is a good time to book tickets and find a hotel in London within walking distance of Buckingham Palace.

'Royal Childhood' (26th July to 28th September 2014) documents the childhoods of nine generations of royal children, giving visitors a glimpse life as a young member of the royal family growing up in a palace.

Among the 150 objects spanning more than 250 years on display are well-loved toys, treasured family gifts and tiny outfits belonging to around 30 royal children, as well as previously unseen photographs and film footage.

The spectacular silver-gilt Lily Font, commissioned by Queen Victoria for the christening of her first daughter Princess Victoria in 1841 and used at almost all major royal baptisms since, is part of the display and can be seen in the Music Room alongside the silk-satin and lace christening robe worn by Prince George of Cambridge.

There are school books, lockets of hair and state gifts on display including a miniaturised Aston Martin given by the manufacturers to Prince Andrew in 1966. Personalised items include private home movies on view in the Ball Room, and a soldier dressing gown belonging to the three-year-old Prince Harry.

The summer exhibition at Buckingham Palace is held in the State Rooms as part of the Summer Opening of the building when, every year, visitors are able to tour the palace from late July until the Queen returns from Balmoral at the end of September.
