LondonTown's 32 Top Family Events in London for Summer 2014

Books About Town and the Moomins entertain families in London this summer.



    LONDON, ENGLAND, August 13, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Books About Town is a great way of exploring the city as a family, inviting visitors to find 50 book benches around London. There's 'Moominsummer Madness' in London this summer as the Polka Theatre in Wimbledon hosts the London premiere of a new play based on Tove Jannson's much loved Moomins and for parents who are bringing children to the city this summer there are many family friendly hotels in London to choose from including 5 star hotels and affordable aparthotels.

On Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th August 2014 celebrations of the 100th anniversary Moomin author, Tove Jannson, culminate in 'Moomin Summer Madness - A Birthday Party,' a free weekend of storytelling and Moomin music at Covent Garden in the Piazza.

There's a huge choice of theatre for kids in London this summer including the Olivier-nominated musical adaptation of Judith Kerr's picture book 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea' which plays at the Lyric Shaftesbury Avenue until 7th September 2014. And throughout August kids can go to top London theatre shows for free through the excellent Kids Week initiative.

The National Theatre's 'The Elephantom,' suitable for children aged 3 and above, is at the New London Theatre, home of War Horse, in London's West End, and 'I Believe in Unicorns,' Michael Morpurgo's children's book about a little boy who hates stories is adapted for the stage by the award-winning Wizard Presents Theatre Company.

Shakespeare's Globe's award-winning immersive theatre piece for children aged 6 to 11 and families 'Muse of Fire' returns taking audiences on a journey around the unseen areas of the Globe.

Also on the South Bank there's 'Groove On Down the Road' at the Southbank Centre, and Monski Mouse family disco at London Wonderground where beatboxer Shlomo presents a 'Beatbox Adventure for Kids' (Thursday 7th and Friday 8th August) and talented mother of two Ali McGregor presents 'Jazzamatazz' (13th to 28th September 2014).

London Transport Museum is hosting free drop-in storytelling and craft sessions as well as organising steam train heritage runs this summer, on Saturday 2nd and Saturday 9th August, and Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August, taking passengers by steam train and in restored carriages on a special journey on London's underground network.

At Kew Gardens kids can run free and enjoy the 'Plantasia' special events. There's a chance to go on a Barefoot Walk, to explore the 17th century Queen's Garden, and discover the Healing Man - a raised planting bed in the shape of a human body showing a fascinating mix of medicinal plants. Kids will also enjoy climbing to the top of the 50-metre high Pagoda which is open to the public for the first time in eight years.

The newly reopened Imperial War Museum entertains the kids with its 'Horrible Histories: Spies' display, and there's fun more from Terry Deary's popular Horrible Histories children's books as the Birmingham Stage Company returns with 'Horrible Histories: Barmy Britain - Part Two' at the Garrick Theatre from 3rd to 31st August 2014.

For families on a budget there are free parties to enjoy: the family-friendly London Mela which comes to Gunnersbury Park on Sunday 31st August 2014, a wonderful celebration of Asian music and culture; and the Little Angel Summer Party on Sunday 7th September 2014 when families can learn how the renowned Islington puppet theatre company puts on its productions.
