Volunteers at Community Event Help Restore Pride in Neighborhood

The University Area CDC still needs volunteers for its third annual 'Paint the Town'.

TAMPA, FL, January 14, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Volunteers and organizational groups are converging on the University Area, Saturday, Jan. 17 for the University Area Community Development Corporation's (UACDC) third annual 'Paint the Town'.

'Paint the Town' is a community event that brings area residents together with an army of volunteers to show what can happen when you pair belief with a willingness to roll up your sleeves and invest some sweat equity into transforming the community. Last year's volunteers removed more than 20 tons of litter from the 3.4 square mile area while also repainting curbs, clearing brush, maintaining the community garden and initiating pond restoration.

Projects planned for the third annual event focus on the UACDC's community initiatives established for the New Year. They include maintaining and cultivating vegetables in the Community Garden, preparing the Harvest Hope Center kitchen to be used for educating youth and residents on healthy cooking as well as assisting elderly and disabled residents in updating homes and property currently in violation of code. Groups will also be on litter patrol, repairing fences and beautifying common areas with landscaping.

In addition, volunteers will canvass the area to create a database of residents in need of working smoke alarms. The completed list will be given to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue who will follow up and install the alarms in the coming weeks for free.
