Jana Harris Named Vice President of Legal Counsel for National Canine Breeder Reform Group

Suzan Cook to serve on advisory board--regulatory research and grants

ATLANTA, GA, February 17, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Reform Canine Breeding and Auctions (RCBA) is composed of volunteers who seek to improve conditions for dogs being bred for profit. They are working to identify where and how regulation of commercial dog breeders could have the most positive influence on both breeders and their dogs.

Jana Harris was recently named Vice President of Legal Counsel for Reform Canine Breeding and Auctions. She brings 34 years of litigation and business management experience to the group. Ms. Harris has a detailed business plan for this nonprofit organization, one that will maximize national support.

Ms. Harris donates her time to RCBA to honor the memory of a dog who was very dear to her. "Kenley was a very sick dog. My vet determined that he had come from a disreputable puppy mill, though I didn't know this at the time I adopted him. He died after only 4 years. My heartbreak led me to research breeding practices and to seek out groups that were working to improve conditions."

Ms. Harris has another dog now. "Avery came from an exemplary breeder, one who provides a clean, safe environment, nutritious meals, room to play and regular veterinary care." She would like to see all dogs come from places where dogs get exemplary care.

Suzan Cook lends her talents to RCBA as a regulatory researcher and, eventually, she will seek grants for them. She clarifies, "Right now we're focused on developing a clear sense of goals and objectives. What's out there state-by-state? What's being enforced?"

Ms. Cook was inspired to contact and join RCBA after hearing about a very large dog breeding operation and subsequent dog auction that was heartbreaking. She contacted Ron Sturgeon, founder of RCBA, and now finds herself "in the company of many successful and diversely talented people--all working toward the goal of consistent humane treatment of breeder dogs."

"Some operations are amazing; others are awful," she said.

As RCBA grows, Ms. Cook will draw on her experience working with non-profits to advise regarding attracting grants and working with volunteers. "At no point do we want to be perceived as inflexible or in opposition to the dog breeding industry," said Ms. Cook.

She summarizes, "We seek to partner with as many individuals and agencies as we can who care about treating dogs humanely--with kindness and love."
