Gregory A. Dumanian, MD, Honored for Excellence in Plastic Surgery

    CHICAGO, IL, March 03, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Gregory Dumanian, MD, Chief and Program Director of the Division of Plastic Surgery with the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in plastic surgery.

Drawing on more than 18 years of experience, Dr. Dumanian is an expert in plastic and reconstructive surgery, including a wide range of aesthetic and functional procedures. He is well known for performing abdominal wall reconstruction, peripheral nerve surgery, aesthetic surgery, hand surgery and reconstructive breast surgery.

Dr. Dumanian has received national recognition for his work on targeted reinnervation for arm amputees. Also known as bionic arm procedure, the process involves tapping into the peripheral nervous system to allow the bionic arm to move with amazing precision. It has been noted that patients who receive the procedure do not require as much training as those who receive traditional prosthetic limbs.

As the chief and program director of the division of plastic surgery, Dr. Dumanian works as a professor of surgery with adjunct appointments as a professor in neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery. He also lectures nationally on the repair of the abdominal wall. His groundbreaking work on targeted reinnervation for arm amputees was featured in The Lancet, The New York Times, The New Yorker and National Geographic.

A fourth generation surgeon, Dr. Dumanian received an MD from The University of Chicago in 1987, and completed residencies at Massachusetts General Hospital in 1992 and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 1995. He was certified in surgery in 1993, plastic surgery in 1998 and hand surgery in 1999.
