Spring Break and Boating Safety in Florida

Florida has more boaters than any other state in the country

BOCA RATON, FL, March 11, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With over 900,000 registered recreational boats, Florida has more boaters than any other state in the country. Florida also leads the nation in boating accidents with nearly double the amount in California, the second highest boating accident state ("2013 Boating Accident Review" Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.) During Spring Break, Florida waterways become especially crowded with inexperienced drivers and distracted operators. Goldman & Daszkal, P.A. urges Florida residents and tourists to follow boating safety rules while on the water.

Boating Accidents

Over 4,000 serious boating accidents are reported each year, and according to the U.S. Coast Guard, there were over 2600 injuries and 560 fatalities resulting from these boating accidents nationwide in 2013. In 2013, over 75% of the fatalities with known cause were from drowning, and 84% of these victims failed to wear life jackets.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, boating driver distraction, improper lookout, operator inexperience, excessive speed, and machinery failure were the primary contributing factors in accidents. Alcohol use played a leading contributing factor in fatal boating accidents. (U.S. Coast Guard.)

Boat operators have the same responsibilities as other motor vehicle drivers -- they must operate boats in a safe and careful manner. If the boat operator fails to operate the boat with care and causes an accident with injuries, the operator may be liable for those injuries. With reputable legal expertise in boating accidents, Boca Raton-based personal injury law firm Goldman & Daszkal, P.A. urges Florida residents and tourists to follow important boating safety measures to stay safe while boating.

Follow these important Basic Boating Safety Rules and remember to always wear a life jacket.
