Barbara S. Hughes, A Fellow of National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys

    MADISON, WI, March 19, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Barbara Hughes of Hill, Glowacki, Jaeger & Hughes, LLP has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in law.

Now celebrating 17 years as an attorney and past partner of Hill, Glowacki, Jaeger & Hughes, LLP, Ms. Hughes focuses her law practice in special needs and elder law, estate planning, including disability trusts, probate and trust administration, and marital property law. Having practiced law for 28 years, she began pursuing her passion for legal services after graduating from the University of Wisconsin Law School with a law degree in 1986. Ms. Hughes has also lectured and written for the State Bar of Wisconsin as well as legal education organizations, regarding various marital property and probate topics, supplemental needs trusts, medical assistance, ethical issues, and on the education power of attorney as a transition-to-adulthood tool for the Special Needs Alliance.

Ms. Hughes initially became involved in her profession because of her prior experiences as a teacher; she previously worked in the cancer education and prevention field. Being exposed to this work, as well as some of her personal experiences with elderly family members and close friends raising children challenged with a disability, drew her interests to the legal field. While practicing law, she has also authored a chapter for the State Bar of Wisconsin in Advising Older Clients and Their Families, Vol.1, titled "Special Ethical Considerations," and co-authored an National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys Journal article "Planning with Special Needs Youth Upon Reaching Majority: Education and Other Powers of Attorney." Ms. Hughes has also pursued pro bono services, including task force and committee work reforming and modernizing the Wisconsin guardianship statutes, creating the WisPACT, Inc. pooled and community trusts for Wisconsin individuals with disabilities.

In 2009, Ms. Hughes' commitment to elder law, including rights of older and disabled people, earned her the honor of being named a Fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys. Having recently been inducted into Worldwide Registry, she also maintains affiliation with the Special Needs Alliance as an active member of their Publications Committee. She was awarded AV Preeminent Attorney status through Martindale-Hubbell, and has been listed in the Top 25 Women Attorneys in Wisconsin. During her free time, Ms. Hughes supports the Luther Memorial Church as a board and committee member and has served on the long range planning committee and boards at Oakwood Retirement Village.

Within the coming years, Ms. Hughes intends to experience continued growth and success in the area of special needs and elder law, while providing continued education to other attorneys and organizations.
