Cause of Gum Disease is Now Linked to Type 2 Diabetes

A recent study published in the "Journal of Leukocyte Biology" indicates that a common cause of gum disease may also be associated with periodontitis.

LOS ANGELES, CA, March 23, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Los Angeles periodontist, Dr. Sharyar Baradaran, is now warning patients about the link between gum disease and type 2 diabetes. A recent study published in the "Journal of Leukocyte Biology" indicates that a common cause of gum disease may also be associated with periodontitis. According to the research, B cells, which are among the most important immune cells, promote bone loss and inflammation in those with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes and gum disease have long been known to be associated. Those with normal B cells were more likely to become obese and develop type 2 diabetes and periodontal disease. Those with the altered genes did not become obese or develop any obesity-related complications, such as type 2 diabetes or periodontal disease.

Dry mouth, uncontrolled blood sugar, and a decreased immune response were all believed to play a role in the connection between the two potentially serious conditions, but this research indicates that B cells may also be to blame. Researchers believe that manipulating the responses of the B cells could lead to new preventative options and alternative treatments that could eliminate periodontal disease in diabetics. The research may also pave the way for new treatments for type 2 diabetes as well. It used a mouse model with a genetic alteration that had no B cells and another group with normal B cells.

While these treatments may not yet be available, Dr. Baradaran can offer patients with gum disease and type 2 diabetes hope. "When patients are seen at the initial consultation," he explains, "They are apprehensive, reluctant and sometimes scared ... Once they know what you are doing and once they understand why you are recommending the course of treatment, (they) appreciate the outcome much more." He provides patients with many treatment options ranging from conservative treatments to surgical procedures. Patients may benefit from scaling and root planing, laser gum treatments, antimicrobial treatment, crown lengthening, gum and bone grafts, and dental implants.
