Looking at soaps and focussing on those whose target market would be predominantly teenagers, and of an age where they would be considering career options, it was found the portrayal of entrepreneurs were shown in a less than positive light and mostly had some sort of criminal background. However, it is not just the soaps that stereotype and portray entrepreneurs in an unflattering and unrepresentative light. The celebrity entrepreneur now dominates the media and popular culture. In a recent survey carried out for the Centre for Entrepreneurs, 76% of respondents believed that TV programmes had raised the profile of entrepreneurs and entrepreneurship. However, 61% of small business leaders found The Apprentice "off-putting" for aspiring entrepreneurs, portraying entrepreneurial candidates in a negative light. Although these programmes increased awareness, the general consensus was that "the poor portrayal of those involved, is doing more harm than good".
