St. John's School Of Law Chooses Delphian School Alumnus As Stein Competition Winner

Delphian alumni is named winner of Stein Competition award winner at St. John's University School of Law. Tony Holesworth won for his paper, "Student-Athletes or Athlete-Students? The Slippery Slope Presented by College Athletes as Employees".

SHERIDAN, OR, May 29, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- St. John's University School of Law students took home honors of two student competitions sponsored by the New York State Bar Association's (NYSBA) Labor and Employment Law Section. Holesworth '16 (Delphian School '09) won the Dr. Emanuel Stein and Kenneth D. Stein Memorial Writing Competition for his paper.

Holesworth, along with two other St. John winners, Cynthia Vella and Samantha Kimmel, were honored at the NYSBA's annual meeting in New York City, where they received the Stein Competition's top prizes ($3000, $2000, $1000 prizes, respectively) for their winning accomplishments.

The Stein writing competition has as its purpose "to recognize excellence among law school students writing in the area of labor and employment law; and to cultivate the relationship between the Section and future labor and employment practitioners."

The local private school alumni says that "There is a recent case in which a group of former players petitioned for college football players at Northwestern University to be legally considered employees so they can have a greater say in the terms and conditions of their 'employment.' My paper is essentially a response to that pending case. While it is somewhat of a legal piece, I like to think that it is very readable. It is ultimately intended to be educational."

Holesworth graduated as a sport management major and legal studies in business minor at Selton Hall University. He has also interned for ESPN New York and for the New York Knicks his junior and senior years. Currently, Holesworth is a legal clerk with the New York State United Teachers this semester and continues part-time work with the New York Knicks.
