Teen Dies from Injuries Sustained in Pool Accident

Louisville attorney: Pool safety crucial during summer months

But whether you're in your own backyard, at a neighbor's or at the public pool, always remember that safety is first.

LOUISVILLE, KY, July 22, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- A 13-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in her family's swimming pool Tuesday has died, a spokesperson for Kosair Children's Hospital told reporters. The announcement came Sunday after the teenager was in critical condition at the hospital for nearly a week.

Authorities believe that the girl might have become trapped beneath a pool liner after falling into the water, according to NBC affiliate WAVE. The victim's name and official cause of death have not yet been released.

"It is with much regret that we learned that this young woman has died," said Karl Truman, founder and principal attorney at The Karl Truman Law Office. "All of us wish to extend our condolences to the family."

According to Louisville news channel WLKY, the girl's grandfather found her in the pool Tuesday evening. A family friend told reporters that the teen loved to swim and used the family pool almost every day.

Unsurprisingly, children are at a significantly higher risk of death by drowning in a swimming pool during the summer. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission website on pool safety, nearly 400 kids drown each year in pools with the majority of those deaths occurring between the months of May and August.

"With warm weather and the kids out of school, swimming pools are often go-to destinations during the summer," Truman said. "But whether you're in your own backyard, at a neighbor's or at the public pool, always remember that safety is first. If possible, accompany your child to the pool or make sure they're swimming under the supervision of an adult."
