Grants and Resources Available for Arts Programs in the NY Tri State Area

Variety New York announces its 2015 requests for proposals & programming calendar.



    NEW YORK, NY, September 20, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Variety New York invites grassroots organization in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut to apply for grants in order to transform the lives of children through the arts. Interested organizations must submit a letter of inquiry by November 20, 2015. Up to 30 applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal for review by Variety's staff and board who will award grants in June 2016. To qualify for a Variety New York grant, organizations must be a grassroots non-profit in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut whose programs are transforming the lives of children through the arts. In addition to the request for proposals, Variety New York is pleased to announce its 2015/16 schedule of programming for local youth and arts organizations. Between September and May, Variety will host eight Brown Bag sessions. Open to the public, these sessions invite practitioners to discuss, build connections and gain skills in topics relevant to the work of transforming the lives of children through the arts. Some highlights in Variety's upcoming calendar include: A Conversation with Alexander Gardner, President of the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation on October 28th; Lessons from The Hive: intersections of youth arts programming with digital media and learning with Leah Gilliam, Director of Hive NYC learning Network on January 27th, and The Secret to Work/Life Balance with Variety Executive Director, Jessica Bynoe on May 25th.

Additionally, for one day each month, Variety New York will open its doors to local organizations and practitioners invested in transforming the lives of children through the arts for walk in, free technical assistance and strategy sessions, use of the Variety resource library, and use of its meeting space for peer to peer networking and brainstorming meetings. Variety's Executive Director, Jessica Bynoe, explains "Variety New York strives to be a truly transparent foundation with a literal open door policy. By hosting more public programming Variety New York is not only able to provide free resources to grassroots youth and art organizations, but we are also creating a learning environment to ensure Variety New York and our partners fully understand the opportunities and threats facing these organizations and its leaders."

Variety New York is one of the only funders exclusively supporting transformative arts programs for youth. Its current portfolio of grantees includes 27 organizations serving over 20,000 children in all five boroughs, Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey and Connecticut. Arts disciplines supported include, but are not limited to, dance, visual arts, performance, art therapy, digital media, fashion, poetry and instrumental instruction. Most grantees have unique demographic foci reaching some of the region's underserved youth including homeless youth, youth in foster care, LGBTQ youth, recent refugees, youth on the autism spectrum, immigrant youth, and young people experiencing various levels of post-traumatic stress disorder.
