Nurture Works Foundation is a unique organization that is passionate about growing confident children in a positive environment. Powering hope in children through their BUZ (Build Up Zone) initiatives, they enable children to develop important life skills such as emotional competence, relationship skills, empathy and respect, conflict resolution, protective behaviors, grief management and bully-proofing. The organization provides empowerment and support through the development of social and emotional well being, as well as mental health education, in the areas of protective behaviors, bully-proofing, relationship skills, emotional competence, overcoming fear, handling grief, resolving conflict and developing life skills. The community benefits through an increase in stronger, more resilient and positively moral young people, thus reducing delinquent behavior, depression, crime, drug abuse and vandalism. The programs and initiatives offered at the organization emphasize the child in the community, school and family. Ms. Deans is most noted for her expertise in relationship-building, facilitation, student social and emotional health and well being, advocacy, curriculum development and cross-curricular integration, project coordination and management, community development, and consulting. In her capacity, she is responsible for ensuring the alignment of programs to recent and current theoretical frameworks and pedagogy, such as SEL (CASEL), looking at the individual programs and strategies used and ensuring that they meet the curriculum standards of Australia, collecting evidence based data for BUZ by doing action research in schools, meeting teams and interviewing teachers, implementing surveys for social and emotional well-being data collection, and visiting schools and classrooms to gather evidence base for the BUZ programs. By volunteering to join committees and affiliated groups Ms. Deans has been able to collaborate with like-minded people who are doing great things in the area of building social and emotional capacity in children.

Ms. Deans believes you learn from doing and by emulating expertise. She attributes her success to her commitment to continually build relationships and connections with people throughout the course of her career. Through connecting with people who are doing great things, Ms. Deans believes she can emulate what they do. She also credits a degree of her success to her mentors, including Steve Heron, who was recently nominated as a local community hero in the Australian and Western Australian of the Year Awards. Ms. Deans intends to use this platform to make people more aware of how Mr. Heron has contributed to the education of students for over fourteen years with his BUZ initiatives. As Values Education Project Officer for Western Australia, Ms. Deans provided professional support for educational associations and schools for values education in line with the Western Australian Curriculum Framework and the then new National Framework for Values Education in Australian schools. During this time, she was very fortunate to work with and meet with many incredibly talented and dedicated people from all over Australia and the world.

Ms. Deans earned a Diploma of Teaching in Early Childhood and Primary Education from the Western Australian Institute of Technology in 1980. She completed courses in curriculum studies and health promotion at Edith Cowan University, working towards a Bachelor Degree in 1994. Additionally, Ms. Deans studied for a Bachelor of Education - Conversion in Adaptive Education for the Inclusive Classroom at the University of Notre Dame in 2005. She holds a Certification IV in Relationship Education, for building relationships and providing family support services from the Australian Institute of Social Relations, which she earned in 2013. Recognized for her hard work, she was the recipient of the Certificate of Honour from the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation WA Branch Inc in 2012. Additionally, she has been distinguished by Worldwide Branding for her level of professional excellence. In the coming years, Ms. Deans intends to encourage the growth and expansion of the Nurture Works Foundation and what she does now. She hopes to raise awareness of the importance of the BUZ initiatives for social and emotional well being and life skill development. She would like to see governments take a more proactive approach and provide funding for social and emotional well being for all children. Most importantly, she hopes to make a difference by making people more aware that it is better to build up young children than fix broken teenagers and adults. She believes that if we have made a difference in just one life, it makes it all worth it.
