HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA, November 02, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Huntington Beach sports medicine physician, Dr. Rick Pospisil, comments on the new AAOS guidelines for preventive and treatment strategies for ACL injuries. The new guidelines regarding proper treatment and rehabilitation for anterior cruciate ligament injuries have been approved by the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Board of Directors. According to a report published by MedicalXpress.com, more than a quarter of a million Americans are sidelined every year by ACL injuries. These new guidelines, which can be found at http://www.orthoguidelines.org/auc, are designed to restore maximum function and a safe return to normal activities after treatment.

New guidelines recommend that those who have suffered ACL injuries should have surgery within five months of the injury. Whenever possible, the patient's own tissue should be used if he or she is between 18 and 35. Other guidelines include recommendations based on age, activity level, the degree of the damage to the ACL and the presence of arthritis. These guidelines provide more direction to doctors who are treating patients with ACL injuries and supports recommendations with clinical evidence. Dr. Pospisil, expert in sports medicine and foot and knee injuries, explains.

Prevention guidelines were also released and are intended for professional, competitive and recreational athletes who have no history of ACL problems. These guidelines are designed to address individual risk factors, such as sports, activity level, growth status and gender to determine the most appropriate ACL prevention program.
